So what have we been up to in the last week.
Well As always Johns collected grain and animal food. We are however totally out of hay. Yes and that's after our normal big delivery back in the summer. At this time of year we go through one of those big bails in less than a week.
So he's also been out to one of our local farmers who supplies us with hay each year. He's done this for a number of years and we get a great price as he puts it on a trailer straight from the field and brings it straight to us. This helps us out as it helps keep costs down. It also helps him as he dose not have to store it. It's a funny thing having all that hay around. You get a fuzzy feeling when it's all in the hanger. You know you are well stocked up ready for hard times and we have been snowed in, in the past.
It reminds me a bit of when they say petrol going up and we all run to the garage to fill the tank before it dose
As you can imagine with the amount of live stock we have, the 2.2 hectors can not supply enough grass. So once we have none in the fields as such. We start to give hay on top up all the other stuff we feed them.
We had to start in the summer this year for the very first time we had nothing. With the lack of rain for weeks and weeks winter feed has been given early and we are not the only one farmers have also done the same. We notice the price of things rising at our wholesalers and this morning when John went to get the grain its gone up by €8 a ton in the last 10 days. That's not allot as such but you start adding that up and as the winter sets in we are sure that, that prices will continue to rise. We had one summer ware it rained continually and in the space of a month barley doubled in price due to the bad harvest.
Thankfully we have been with this farmer for some years and when he delivered we said then that we were worried. By that time he was saying he had not been able to get a second hay cut. Which he is often able to do here. So this evening Johns of with the trailer to collect a couple of round bails and talk about more which means double the amount than we used last year. When you consider this you start to think of food costs in general. Yes we eat all our own meat but consider the farmer who is feeding a nation and the double costs to him. Some one will have to pay for it in the long run.
Oh and each one of those round bails are €20 each. It dose not sound allot when you say that, but add that up. That trailer cost us € 350
So after a visit to our farmer we will see the winter through. He bless him, he realised we would, like every one need and has kept enough back for us.
Have a great day every one love hugs and blessing to you all Karen xxx
