Hello
It's been full on here for the last couple of weeks. John went off and visited his family for a week in the UK. Which is fine but in the middle of lambing and kidding. Was I glad I had good friends here to give a hand.
We have a ewe that each year, she gives birth and each year she for some reason struggles to feed it. I stood in the field, wind blowing a gale. Yes we do need the barn sorted out, instead of doing all this in a field. Thinking....... do I or don't I take this lamb away and inside. The problem is once you start your committed, as such there is no going back. You have to take care of it and become as such it's mum. Well by tea time I had no draught. It was off it's feet and really starting to go down hill. So, in it came under the heat lamp and in front of the fire. Honestly for something so small could it make a noise. It's BAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa literally sounded like a fog horn and all night, it called for it's mum. I had it in a box next to the bed at one point. Trying in vain to shut it up, feeding it in the hope it might just shut up long enough, for us all to get some sleep. If I got 2 to 3 hours sleep all night I think it was allot. In the morning, after it picked up and was jumping round the kitchen. I though go on, lets give it a go with it's mum. After all there is no way, I wanted another night of no sleep. So I took it up the top field and gave it a try and this shows you what mum is like. She was over joyed to see her little one and took it straight back. I was thanking God I can tell you. We have kept a good eye on it but it is now doing well.
In all of this the goats started to give birth one after another. Allot have been fine but we have also had up's and downs. With triplets born and mum could not cope. We had to bring two inside and bottle feed. We also had a breach birth which was very sad as it was born dead. The triplets are doing fine even though one is the tinniest thing ever. It's been named little peeeeeee.
But we are having a great year 8 lambs running around and 8 baby goats which could end up being more by the end of the week.
I am how ever know bottle feeding 4 times a day and milking the goats as well. Guests do however love to bottle feed the baby's
John and I are working on the goat shed as hes back. We had a rat problem under one of the floors. So we are extending and are putting in another bottle floor which gives insulation and keep the place warmer. It's also really good at keeping the rats out. We first saw this done on a TV program and I have put the link below. This is the fourth floor we have done and its great collecting all those bottles needed. hick hick up lol.
So you dig out the floor lay a base coat and then put the bottles on top. This traps air and hold on to the heat once covered with another layer. The top layer is agricultural cement because animal peeeee well like to break the surface down and well if we have to use cement lets at least make it last.
If you do have the time to watch the link below I hope you enjoy.
Have a great week love and blessings Karen
